Free School Meals at Christmas
Ilkley GGT 2020 - Free School Meals
This year the Ilkley Great Get Together brought together schools, voluntary services and local people to provide Free School Meals in the holidays. In October half term we provided access to hot food at Christchurch cafe, and sandwiches and drink from La Staz and Loafer Bakery. At Christmas we provided 140 families with 4 bags of storecupboard food in collaboration with the Foodbank; fresh veg (thank you M&S, Tescos and Booths) and fruit (thank you Ilkley Town Council for the funds); a Christmas cake (made by local people), mice pies (many donated by Loafer), Chocolates (from Whittakers) and Christmas Crackers (donated by local people). Alongside this there were vouchers for a drink and sandwich from local Cafes organised by La Stazione, and a £25 grocery supermarket voucher (from the funds raised overnight in Ilkley). WOW. You can see the story on our FB page here
We provided 2weeks of deliveries for fruit and veg.
The food parcels were delivered by the schools who know all the families in need.
This was a heroic effort by schools where teachers gave up their holidays to pack and deliver over 3 days, and IGS in particular for use of the hall/ caef and for clearing up all the delivery boxes.
Overall we had 200 volunteers.
Thank you also to Martinez for the loan of their Van, everyone who loaded up their small vans and campervans with bags of food as we packed (Helen, Amanda, Debbie, Karen, Miranda); All Saints for the use of their hall to pack the foodbank supplies; Coop Menston, M&Co, Wharefedale Embroidery for the vital plastic bags (we needed 1400 bags!).
A fantastic community effort.
We may need to do it again in Feb......
